Many servo drives are resolver based and can be tested with servo motors (of different brands) with resolvers. Most drives these days are encoder based. To properly test most encoder based drives, it requires an exact match of the encoder that the drive was designed around. Most are manufacturer specific - that is to say that a Fanuc motor and encoder are required to fully test a Fanuc drive and an Indramat motor and encoder are required to fully test an Indramat drive.
