Boards that have experienced catastrophic failure - usually caused by an energized board experiencing a high current short circuit by water or other conductive liquid coming in contact with the circuitry. Evidenced by blown components and damaged tracks due to high current. Occasionally a hole or two may be blown through the board itself. This can be repaired.
Boards that are experiencing an intermittent failure -- usually caused by a non-energized board coming in contact with a water/liquid vapor which then evaporates and leaves dissolved salts. These salts crystalize out onto the board can cause short circuits when the board is eventually energized. Damage can be catastrophic as described above or less obvious. The salts continue to attract moisture which can cause further corrosion and failure.
Upon receipt of a water damaged board, our technicians will remove any mechanical or electro-mechanical parts such as relays, switches, potentiometers, voltage sources such as batteries, and other water sensitive devices such as lamps, buzzers etc. Capacitors are discharged, some are removed.
Once this is done, the board is immersed in a cleaning solution bath for several hours and vibrated at high frequency (ultrasonic) to release any water residue or crystallization from the board. The board is then rinsed and inspected. Any further residue is brushed off by hand until the board is clean.
Tracks and components are tested for integrity, the previously removed components are reinstalled and the board undergoes troubleshooting in the normal manner.
